Fancy A Solar Sash? New Mac Strap Soaks In The Sun

No, this product has nothing to do with Apple Computer. Even though the name might imply the release of some cool, new, green product, rest assured that Apple is still one of the least eco-friendly corporations in America. Phew.

Called The Mac-Strap, this new solar accessory arrives at a time when everything from backpacks to suitcases are coming equipped with photovoltaic cells. The difference with this product, however, is that a.) you can wear is like a sash (ooh, ahhh) and b.) it's incredibly versatile. The flexible lanyard can be slung over your rucksack, hung around your neck, affixed to your tent pole, or placed on the dashboard of your car. All the while, it will help power your MP3 player, cell phone, or camera. Looking at the amount of cells on this strap, it's going to be awhile to reach full charge, but the option is there if you need it. Who knows the types of situations you might find yourself in when traveling. Sometimes, a backup light-weight energy source is a great addition to your supply kit.

While still just a prototype, it wouldn't surprise me if more products like this one are on their way. As greater advances in thin-film solar happen, more fashion accessories will start to include some type of "emergency" power option. Outdoor clothing and supply brands will especially embrace this technology as a way to further promote 'comfort in nature'.

What do you think of these devices? Are they useful or a waste of resources that might be put to greater use somewhere else? Let us know!

    Sweet!

I see a lot of people looking for an outlet in the office to charge their cellphones. In its own little way this nifty device, coverted to a cellphone charger, could help shave off a few watts from the office electricity bill.

Very useful too in typhoon/hurricane prone areas where electricity gets knocked out for days and with it your chance to charge your cellphone.

    :D

I will be taking an extended journey off the grid for several months next year and products like this could be useful. I’d like to be able to charge a digital camera (or it’s batteries), a cell phone for the occasions when I’m close to civilization, and probably an mp3 player if I get one.

I’ll probably need more solar cells than that, though.
