Yahoo’s New Site Encourages Bulb Replacement, Ranks Your State
I'm on a roll here with new grassroots websites to share with y'all. One of the producers of 'An Inconvenient Truth' has teamed up with Yahoo to create a campaign called '18 Seconds'; or roughly the amount of time it takes the average person to switch out a light bulb.
The new site, 18seconds.org, is slick and informative on the topic of greenhouse gas emissions and the differences a simple CFL bulb can make in helping the planet. As producer Lawrence Bender said, "If every person in the country bought an energy saver bulb, we could save 30 billion pounds of coal and $8 billion in energy savings."
All data located on the site is volunteered from major retailers, including DIY locations like Home Depot. From January 1, 2007 onwards, this information will be constantly updated to give people an idea of how their particular town or state is doing. Currently, New York state is in the bottom five in terms of CFL sales. Surpise leader Arkansas is sharing the love with city leader Casper, Wyoming. I'm hoping my recent 12-pack purchase from Lowes will catapult Ithaca into the top ten. I challenge you to stop us!
Anyways, check out the site and see where you rank. It's great to see Yahoo embracing such a cool concept. Currently, over 97,000 cars have been offset with CFL replacements. If you've got 18 seconds to spare, perhaps we can retire a few more.
